Llanddwyn Island
Llanddwyn
Fabulous weather for a few days in September - shame it wasn't like this in the summer.
We were fortunate to be invited on a trip to Llanddwyn Island in a flotilla of 3 boats from Silver Bay. I'm sure most of the year it's very quiet here but on this particular day just about everyone seemed to be there. The island is accessible at low tide from Newborough Sands but otherwise you have to come by boat. Two lighthouses, ruins of a church, lovely row of cottages and this huge crucifix dominate the landscape. The
Anglesey history web site says the name Llanddwyn means "The church of St. Dwynwen". She is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St. Valentine. Her feast day, 25 January, is often celebrated by the Welsh with cards and flowers, just as is 14 February for St. Valentine.
