The Church in the Sea

One of the great
things about Geocaching is getting out to see places
that you might never of known about and caches are
often in interesting locations with a fascinating
history. The one at 'The Church in the Sea' has
both. Just a few miles as the crow flies from
Silver Bay, it is located near the village of
Aberffraw and the church (St Cwyfan) is only accessible
on foot at low tide. Originally built on a
peninsula, the sea has slowly nibbled away at the
surrounding land leaving the church cut off. Some
130 years ago the church was protected by the
building of a sea wall, making the small off-shore
island you can see today.
The church only manages 3 services a year with
occasional weddings and christenings... a lot more
than we make!
